When looking for a caring dentist for your children, you want to find a skilled professional who can provide your child with all the services they need to ensure optimal oral health. But it’s equally important to know that the dentist you choose is compassionate and sensitive to your child’s unique needs.
At the office of Andrew Cole DDS, we wouldn’t have it any other way! Our team wants children of all ages to have healthy smiles, so we go out of our way to help kids see trips to the dentist as positive, enjoyable experiences.
Protecting Your Child’s Dental Health
The American Dental Association recommends bringing your child for their first appointment when the first baby tooth erupts, but no later than their first birthday.
Parents often question why it’s necessary to start children at such an early age. The answer is that baby teeth are the building blocks for the proper development of permanent teeth that will follow. These teeth need space to come in correctly, and baby teeth act as the placeholder.
But if a baby tooth is lost too soon because of decay, neighboring teeth start shifting into the empty space, causing the permanent tooth that follows to come in at an odd angle. This can ultimately lead to tooth misalignment and the possible need for orthodontic treatment.
Preventive Treatments for Healthy Teeth
If we find a cavity in a baby tooth, we need to fill it as quickly as possible to preserve the tooth and your child’s long-term oral health. In addition to routine exams, cleanings, and fillings, Dr. Cole may also recommend fluoride treatments to strengthen and protect their teeth.
Dental sealants act as a barrier to protect your child’s teeth from developing cavities, and Dr. Cole often recommends them for teeth that are prone to cavities such as molars with uneven surfaces and deep grooves. This extra layer of protection is especially helpful during the teen years when kids are more likely to develop cavities.
The Sensitive Care Your Family Deserves
We understand that first visits are often stressful for children and parents alike. For this reason, we recommend that you bring your child along with you to your appointments. Getting used to us and the surroundings in this way is non-threatening to your child and will help them feel more comfortable when it's time for their own appointment.
Your child’s first visit is meant to be low-stress, and we will spend some time getting to know them before we attempt any treatment. This is the time for counting teeth, taking a ride in the dental chair, and showing them some of our instruments. That way, when it comes time for their cleaning and exam, they will already feel safe and secure with us.
Most children can benefit from nitrous oxide sedation because it’s safe, easy to administer, and it doesn’t produce any lingering after-effects. Your child will feel very calm and relaxed during their treatment, and at the end of the appointment, they will be able to return to their usual activities.
Kids of all ages are especially prone to dental emergencies, and we will make every effort to see them the same day. We want you to have peace of mind in knowing that we are always here for you and your child.
